Mahuru Māori: he whakaaro mō te arero whakairotia

(English version in first comment – ngā mihi!)

He Pākeha tēnei e tuhi ana… Me pēhea ōku whakaaro? Ko tāku ki a koutou, kei ahau ōku aku whakaaro.

Engari, me whakatakoto ōku whakaaro i te momo whakatakotoranga reo Māori, i runga i ngā tikanga Māori hoki. He pai tēnā – he tika, he Māori tēnei momo whakaaro. ‘Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi’- āe mārika, te mutunga kē mai o te tika o tēnei momo kōrero.

I tōku whānau, ahakoa he whānau Pākehā kē, ka rere tonu te reo Māori – ko māua ko taku tamāhine e pēnei ana – ā,  i tōna wā,  wānangatia ai ngā whakatakotoranga reo, me te ‘whakaaro Māori’ hoki.

Ngā mihi o te wā!

Mahuru Māori – kua whakatakotoria anō te mānuka

mahuru-maori-2017

(English translation in first comment – ngā mihi!)

Kei te whārangi ipurangi o Mahuru Māori tēnei mihi…

“Kia ora!

Mō tōna hoa wahine, me kōrero rāua ko taku tamāhine i te reo, mena ka taea.

I noho mū ana, ā, i pātai mai ia mō ōku tīpuna, mehemea i mate ai tētahi, etāhi rānei i tērā pakanga. Ko tāku ki a ia, e kāo. Otirā, i mauheretia taku tupuna tāne mō he wā poto noa iho i Soames Island, i te whanga o Te Whanga Nui a Tara. Ahakoa he wā poto, tino kaha tōna mamae, me te wairua kawa i tōna ngākau nā tērā mahi a te kawana. Nō Tiamani ia…

Ka mutu, i whakautu mai taku hoa mahi (nō Wīwī ia)… e ai ki te kōrero, i mate ai te tuakana, teina rānei o te pāpā o tona tupuna tāne, otirā kāore i tino mōhiotia ko wai ia, ko wai rāua, rātou rānei…

Ka noho, ka noho, nāwai rā, huri ano māua ki ā māua mahi.

Arthur Brusselle, “Diksmuide” (1918–19)

To put together a new book of images of World War I, The First World War: Unseen Glass Plate Photographs of the Western Front, Carl De Keyzer restored original plates made by photographers whose work, in their own time, was printed without fanfare and viewed at a much smaller size. De Keyzer’s book offers photographs of soldiers, civilians, and landscapes in a large format that represents the war with startling clarity.

Some of the most striking images in the book are this series of photographs by Arthur Brusselle, from Bruges. In 1918 and 1919, the Belgian government commissioned Brusselle to go to the places where the war had hit hard and record what he saw. These plates are held by the archive of the City of Bruges.

He rā maumahara i ngā pakanga i Aotearoa nei – he rā puhi, he rā motuhake

Charles Heaphy’s sketch of Mere-Mere [sic] from Whangamarino Redoubt, 1863. This illustration shows a view from above the fortification with three cannon in the foreground. Though apparently poorly aimed, the gun at left is firing on the Kingite defences at Meremere, about 2 km away. The gunboat Pioneer is in the Waikato River below the fortification (anei te herenga ki te pikitia nei).

MeremereWaikatowars

He uaua te ‘riterite tonu’ otirā, ka haere tonu – me te kauhau a Hinurewa Poutu

Ka kitea te hukapapa kei waho, ahakoa he iti.

LanceOSullivan-263x300

I tērā wiki i konei mātou ko taku hoa rangatira, me ā māua tamariki e toru (he pakeke rātou ināianei). He whare karakia tawhito, he whare koroua hoki, i te taiwhenua, i te Pigroot (he huarahi tērā i te tonga o te Waka a Māui). Kotahi anake te rūma, he momo wharenui ki roto, ā, ki ahau, ko tēnei te wāhi tino pai o te ao kia whakatā ai, pānui pukapuka ai, whakatangi ukerere ai, me te aha… I haere mātou (me ngā hoa rangatira o taku tama me te pōtiki), mō ngā rā e rua.

Nō reira, he aha te raru kē? Nā, i tērā marama, i te pātū i te taha nōta o te whare nei, he nui kē te pū wahie i konei – he paina, maroke rawa atu, he wāhie mō te ahi i roto… otirā, i tētahi pō kerekere pea, kua tāhaetia ngā wahie. Ko te waimarie, ki roto i te whare ētahi o erā mea (he koata o te pū pea). I tapaina i Paenga whāwhā i te taha o tētahi kaipāmu e noho tata ana i reira, he tangata tino rata ki a mātou. He nui tana pukuriri ina kua rangona e ia kua whānakotia te nuinga o te pū wahie. Otirā, he raru ki uta – ko te mea nui, he pai te noho me te whānau, te katakata, te waiata tahi, te purei “Trivial Pursuits,” me ērā momo mea.

He raru ki uta noa iho.

Mauri ora tātou!
